Roberts and Friend 1998If were on autopilot for half the day, we want those routinesto be good ones. So what really works for ditching bad habits? And isnt horribly difficult?Letsget to it. . .1. Change abad habit. SingularAt one time we have all felt as ifour lives are a constellation of bad habits. You get home from work, youre exhausted and you go from one I should not be doing this to the next. Its like you need to change everything. And you need to do it tomorrow No. Bad. Wrong. Does not compute.Do less. Just focus on fixingone thing at a time. When I spoke toPower of Habitauthor Charles Duhigg, he said thatsthe key to lasting change. Heres CharlesIf you try to transform everything at once, it tends to be very, very destabilizing. In general, what people should do, is they should think of change as a project. Its a project that takes a whileNow, it might feel frustrating to say, If you have ten habits you want to change, that means its going to take eight months or nine months. The truth of the matter is if this is a behavior thats really important, changing it will have this huge impact on your life. Its worth spending a month to change one behavior permanently. Youre going to be reaping the benefits of that for the next decade. You dont need to overhaul your life. Just killone bad habit. Give it a month and then move on to the next.(To learn the four rituals neuroscience says will make you happy, click here.)Okay, youre focused on one thing. Whats a painless way to start?2. Dont stop. Just countWhatever it is you shouldnt be doing, you dont have to stop yet. (Doesnt that sound nice?)Dont try to reduce the habit, reduce the variabi lity in the habit. In other words, dont even try to quit smoking try to smoke the exact same number of cigarettes each day. Or only check Facebook your usual 90 times an hour. This tinyeffort toward self-control can lead to a decrease in bad habitsover time, unconsciously.Via The Willpower Instinct How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do To Get More of ItBehavioral economist Howard Rachlin proposes an interesting trick for overcoming the problem of always starting a change tomorrow. When you want to change a behavior, aim to reduce the variability in your behavior, not the behavior itself. He has shown that smokers asked to try to smoke the same number of cigarettes every day gradually decrease their overall smoking- even when they are explicitly told not to try to smoke less.Just paying attention to those numbers can make a big difference. Merely looking at the calorie counts on food labels before eating was more effective for weight loss than exerciseLabel users who did not exercise displayed a slightly greater likelihood of weight loss than those who exercised but did not read food labels. Additionally, those who only read labels were more likely to improve their chances of weight loss by adding exercise to their routines rather than abandoning label usage in favor of exercise. You dont have to deny yourself at first. Just notice the numbers and continue to behave badly - but consistently.(To learn what Harvard research says will make you happier and more successful, click here.)Thats not hard. You dont have to change. How else can you beat bad habits without changing yourself at all?3. Dont change you. Change your worldEvery day I download Instagram on my iPhone and every day I delete Instagram off my iPhone. Does it sound like I have a problem? Nope. Its a great way to make sure I only check it once a day.The app isnt there tempting me to check it 600 times. And its a pain to keep downloading it. And this is a big secret to beating bad habits.Dont change yourself. Change your context. We engage in habits because of triggers in our environment. Remove the triggers or make them more difficult to reach and youre less likely to engage in the behavior. When I spoke to behavioral economist Dan Ariely he said context affects your behavior much, much more than you think.Heres DanOne of the big lessons from social science in the last 40 years is that environment matters. If you go to a buffet and the buffet is organized in one way, you will eat one thing. If its organized in a different way, youll eat different things. We think that we make decisions on our own but the environment influences usto a great degree. Because of that we need to think about how tochange ourenvironment. So get the tempting stuff away from you. Bestselling author Shawn Achor recommends the 20 second rule. Make bad habits 20 seconds harder to begin and youre far less likely to engage in them.Heres ShawnWatching too much television? Change the things around you.(To learn an FBI behavior experts secrets for getting people to like you, click here.)Pretty simple, right? Good. And lets keep it that way. Do you need to put pressure on yourself and be a demanding taskmaster to eliminate bad habits? Nope. Neuroscience says do the exact opposite4. Stress.UCLA neuroscientist alexanderplatz Korbsays staying relaxed helps your brain make the right choices.Heres AlexI have a friend who always says, Stress takes the prefrontal cortex offline. And we also need to correct some myths. How do you really eliminate those bad habits? Its easy Dont.5. Dont eliminate bad habits. Replace them.Ironically, studies show saying, Ill never do that again makes you even more likely to do that again.Charles Duhigg wrote the book on habits. And he says the research is clear you cant eliminate bad habits but you can replace them.Want to stop shoving donuts in your mouth? When you feel the urge, put some sugarless gum in your piehole. The trigger stays the same and you still get a nice reward but youre replacing the bad behavior with a good one.FromThe Power of Habit Why We Do What We Do in Life and BusinessWe kno w that a habit cannot be eradicated- it must, instead, be replaced. And we know that habits are most malleable when the Golden Rule of habit change is applied If we keep the same cue and the same reward, a new routine can be inserted.Notice what triggers your bad behavior and then replace your usual response with a new one that gives you a different (but still pleasurable) reward.(To learn a Georgetown professors secrets for managing your time like an expert, click here.)Am I making this all sound too easy? Job Opportunities Growing in Orlando, Florida

Job Opportunities Growing in Orlando, FloridaJob Opportunities Growing in Orlando, FloridaOrlando, Florida may be synonymous with theme parks and trade shows, but central Florida is now becoming a destination for job seekers. Whether itsagriculture, construction, or non-profits, the Orlando job market is on the rise.At the start of each month we atSimply Hiredlike to take a step back, look at the jobs available on our site, and see what they can tell us about the U.S. economy as a whole. We also look at a specific metro area that saw notlageable job growth over that month. This month, were highlighting hiring in Orlando, Florida. The U.S. as a whole enjoyed1.18% month-over-month in September while jobs in Orlando grew 1.65% during the saatkorn period. This increase comes along with some interesting hiring developments around the Orlando area. This is welcomed news for an area in need of job market stimulation since the ending the Space Shuttle program. The top posting industries in the Orlando metro area were agriculture, construction, and non-profit. While each industry saw growth across the U.S., whats noteworthy in Orlando is the growth of non-profit jobs.Orlandos non-profit jobs grew 22% in September, compared to the national average of 7%. The spike in non-profit hiring Orlando is currently enjoying comes at a time when non-profits are in the news in the central Florida area. Where traditionally non-profits are identified through assistance initiativesproviding clothing, interview help, housing and so forthrecently things have been changing for non-profits in Florida. As the Orlando Sentinelreported in early September, where once non-profits focused on assisting unemployed persons, today the focus has shifted to providing jobs. Although the assistance approach is not without its merits observers have found providing an actual job is far more transformative in helping unemployed persons then only traditional assistance. As Susan Vidal, executive director of Chr istian HELP stated, We cant continue to just put a Band-Aid on theneed.Today more and more non-profits in central Florida are using their profits to hire the unemployed. Companies like Goodwill Industries, that have long kept employment as their priority, are expanding their efforts too, 2013 saw a 20% rise in placement for Goodwill, putting some 6,500 Central Florida residents to work. With this positive effect on unemployment in mind, well watch to see if the trend continues through the U.S.Construction jobs have also been on the rise in the Orlando area. Expect this trend to continue as construction is soon to begin on the Orlando leg of the All Aboard Florida passenger railroad service.Read the full Employment Outlook report.

Common Job Scams and How to Avoid ThemCommon Job Scams and How to Avoid ThemThere are as many scams as real job openings ansprechbar - sometimes it seems like more. Whether its trying to sell services or paid training or offering to file for unemployment for you, there are many different types of scams to avoid. During the interview, you discover that the job you applied for doesnt exist and the company tries to interest you in a completely different position.? Scam Details When a company is hiring for jobs that nobody wants, they believe they may be able to more readily convince someone to take the job if they discuss it with them in person. Career Consulting ScamsYou may be contacted by career consultants who are impressed with your resume and would like to represent you. In addition, you may be interested in their marketing, resume writing, resume reviews, or other career-related services.? Scam Details In reality, this is a pitch for products or services the company wants to sell you. Credit Report ScamsThis scam occurs when an employer asks to see your credit report as part of the hiring process and you end up paying a fee for obtaining a credit report or for other services. In addition, the sca mmer can collect your personal information and steal your identity. How does this type of scam work? The employer requests that you use a specific free service that ends up costing you money. However, the employer isnt a legitimate employer and you may end up paying for a credit report. ExamplesThese examples were sent by email to job applicants who responded to job postings online. We would like to take this moment to thank you for your response to our Craigslist job posting, as well as inform you that, after reading through your resume, we are interested in discussing this job opportunity with you in person. In order to proceed to the next step of the hiring process, you will need to get your credit score checked. We have arranged a FREE service for you to obtain your score. Once you have completed this process, please email me the confirmation ASAP, so we can move forward. Direct Deposit ScamsDirect deposit scams involve getting job applicants to give out their bank account info rmation. These scams, which are often posted on Craigslist and other job boards or sent via email, often offer a position that seems too good to be true - high salary, minimal hours, no in-person interview required. The scammer then says he can only deliver your paychecks by direct deposit, and he, therefore, requires your account information. After giving the scammer your account numbers, he will take money from your account, and you will never hear from the employer again. This scam is especially common among work-at-home and telecommuting jobs. Scam DetailsWhile direct deposit is convenient, most legitimate employers do not require it. Therefore, never share your bank account information or agree to a direct deposit beforechecking out the company and the jobto make sure they are legitimate, accepting a job offer and completing new hire paperwork. Money Laundering Job ScamsMoney laundering scams are some of the most common online job scams. Money laundererspost jobs onlineor simply send out emails saying they are hiring employees to help process payments or transfer funds. Scam Details Very often, the fake employer says he is from a foreign country and thus cannot transfer funds himself (and also cannot meet you in person). He or she will ask you to use your personal bank account to move what are actually stolen or bad checks and have you keep a small percentage of the money for yourself. When you deposit a bad or stolen check, you are liable to the bank. Not only will you have to pay the bank, but, because the money being transferred is typically stolen, you could be arrested for committing theft. Related Scams Other money laundering scams occur when an employerhires you for a fake job but says he can only pay you viadirect deposit. He will then ask for your account information and personal information. Rather than paying you, he will use this information to access your account. Recruiting Scams Recruiters may contact you saying that have clients with positi ons that you could be qualified for, though they dont have current openings. However, they also offer training sessions you should purchase to enhance your candidacy.? Scam Details This is another attempt to sell you services, rather than to recruit you for legitimate job openings. Phishing Scams In this type of scam, you get an email saying a company has clients with positions that you could be qualified for, even sending you the description of what could be a legitimate job opening Your online resume has recently come to my attention. I am impressed with your qualifications. A client of mine needs to fill an opening and because of your previous experience in the tech industry, I believe you might be a solid match. In order to see the full job description, just click on the link below or paste it into your browsers address bar. Scam Details You cant apply directly for the job. Instead, you are directed to a link on a website, where you fill out a form with your contact information and other personal information. This is an attempt to collect your personal information either to sell you services or to sell to a third party. Shipping ScamsShipping job scams offer you a work-at-home job, promising that you can earn a lot of money by reshipping - repackaging and forwarding goods. In many cases, this is a scam. There arent many legitimate reasons why a company would need someone to ship or reship merchandise for them. Its easy to send merchandise directly without having a third party repack and resend it for you. Also considered postal fraud, these scams have become prevalent as more and more Americans looking for employment seek work-at-home jobs. These companies often seem legitimate, claiming to be engaged in correspondence managing or distribution. Do not be deluded by companies that seem legitimate or by the promise of an impressive salary. Home receiving/shipping is not an actual job. Scam Details How do reshipping scams work? The company will ask you to pay for shipping, and then promise to reimburse you later. However, what you are repackaging and forwarding are actually stolen goods - often consumer electronics. If the company actually pays you back, it will be with a fake check. You will ultimately have to pay for shipping charges and be liable to your bank. Also, if the company asks you to declare the packages as gifts, you may be found guilty of falsifying government documents. Unemployment ScamsPeople or companies offer to complete or file your unemployment insurance claim for you - for a fee. They may say they have a connection to your State Labor Department and can expedite the processing of your claim. Scam Details There is no benefit to paying a service to file your claim. In fact, some states probit anyone other than the claimant from accessing the unemployment system. Unemployed workers should file their own claims for unemployment via the state unemployment office website or by phone. Using a paid service to file your cla im will not ensure faster handling. Pros and Cons of Joining a Startup

Pros and Cons of Joining a StartupPros and Cons of Joining a StartupShould you consider taking a position at a startup company?Consider this There is a strong possibility that on your first day of work you will discover that your desk consists of a couple of used orange crates with an old door laid across the top. But that is just the beginning. You will never know what to expect. And it is almost guaranteed that your expectations or plans will leid turn out as anticipated. The results could be far better or far worse than you imagine. At the very least, you will gain a wealth of experience that is difficult to find anywhere else. And in todays tough job market place, a startup opportunity can be very appealing. If the company has a unique market niche, solid business strategy and reasonable funding, then go ahead, climb on board, and lets see where the ride will take you. Here are just a few of the risks and rewards1. No job description The famous phrase other duties as required becom es the norm. You may have to fill in for others when they are gone and perform duties that are not even close to your normal responsibilities. You will be called upon to wear many hats. This can be very frustrating and nerve-wracking, but it can also make your job extraordinarily exciting.2. Low salary or no salary It is highly unlikely that you will start with a salary or wage that is typical for the industry or for your functional area. In fact, you may be paid in stock, or a combination of salary and stock. Almost all startups face tough cash-flow challenges. Revenue or funding dollars are usually put into marketing and product development instead of salary increases or bonuses. If the company is poorly funded and revenue is slow in coming, you may not receive paychecks on time.3. Inadequate resources Since cash flow is tight, you probably wont have the luxury of having all the latest gadgets from hardware to software, manufacturing machinery to office equipment or support staff to cleaning supplies. Instead of buying new, you end up patching up the old.4. Long hours Regular office hours? Whats that? Nine to 5 is a fiction at most startups. Its more likely you will be expected to work long hours and weekend. And unless you are non-exempt, you will work those hours without compensation.5. Out-of-business An overwhelming number of start-ups will not survive past the first year. The revenue and/or funding were just not there, so you are now back on the street looking for a new job, and the only thing you can do with your stock is to wallpaper your next office. But its not all headaches and pitfalls. If you have a spirit of adventure, then the rewards may well be worth the risks. The rewards a startup offer include1. A gigantic financial return If the company is successful, your salary, bonuses, profit sharing and other financial incentives can be huge. If you own stock and the company has a successful initial public offering (rare today) or is acquired by anot her company (much more common), you can conceivably retire a young multimillionaire. For example, many of the original employees of Microsoft, America Online (AOL), Google and Facebook are now millionaires several times over. But a successful start-up doesnt have to be a Microsoft to produce wealthy employees. Many start-ups with accelerated growth will produce very wealthy, highly-paid employees at every level.2. A wealth of experience Even if you dont realize the big bucks, your hands-on, multi-functional experience will be a real asset for your long-term professional growth. Typically your marketability and compensation increase dramatically at a stratup.3. New friends and business colleaguesMany existing companies have an established core of clients and vendors, but start-ups are always seeking new customers, vendors and strategic partners. There is never a dull moment. You will continually meet new people and build great friendships and business contacts that will last you thro ughout your career. Perhaps one of those new business contacts will become the catalyst that leads you to your next job.4. Heart-pounding excitement The exhilaration of being part of a successful startup produces pride and a sense of accomplishment that is extraordinary. You will never regret the long hours, hard work and smaller paycheck. So are you ready to take the risks? Startups are not for everyone. But if you want to have an extraordinary career adventure, then go for the gusto. Hold on. It will be an exciting ride.

For example, a hiring manager may not binnensee everything she wants in you as a candidate, but if she perceives potential for your combination of raw ability and experience to blossom, she may take the risk. Likewise, your manager may not see everything he wants in you, but if he can reasonably calculate that more time/effort could accelerate your upward tendencies, he may give you the resources and space necessary to realize that potential.Although your current performance remains the clearest proof of your capabilities, you can demonstrate a strong upside by exercising specific attitudes, skills, and behaviors that signal atta inable advantage that is just too good to pass up. If youre ready to land the next great job, or just re-brand yourself to gain access to better assignments and increased responsibilities in your current role, here are three skills to boost your upside at work.Recognize the Top Priority in Every SituationChange affects the bottom, middle, and top of every organization. One of the greatest challenges of change is that it clouds priorities and obscures the best way forward. Regardless of your place on the organization chart, you can elevate your upside by focusing yourself (and others) on the top priority in every situation. To do this, you have to pay attention to the forces that influence your situation. By truly knowing your context, you can then assess priorities and define clear and relevant goals. This discipline allows you to then manage the gaps between goals and obstacles in order to stay the course and get the job done. Managers and leaders building their teams around savvy, forward-looking professionals want you to embody these abilities. In order to recognize the top priority in every situation, start by applying three skills in this CG2 sequenceTRACK CONTEXT Spend time noticing whats happening around you and spotting the critical moments that could lead to something important. Scanning both the internal and external environments to understand trends and relevant events.SET GOALS Take steps to define priorities and select goals that are supported by the context and aligned with the vision. Goals are created independently and collaboratively and they are always connected to a desired outcome.CLOSE GAPS Intentionally manage the gaps as barriers emerge, context shifts, and alignment and shared commitment to goals waiver.Integrating this CG2 sequence will help you process your circumstances in periods of heightened ambiguity and rapid change (i.e. most days of the week). And, the progression allows you to evolve in step with change without becoming col lateral damage to its shifting priorities and contradictions. As you get better at anticipating changes in the environment around you, your finger on the pulse of things helps you more efficiently determine priorities and gather intelligence on their related challenges and opportunities. To test this, consider your upside from a leaders perspective. Imagine you were a manager and needed to offer a promotion to one of two candidates, which one would you choose?Candidate 1 is friendly, professional, easy to get along with, coachable, and consistent in her performance. She knows the job well, she shows up, and she gets it done. Candidate 2 is also is friendly, professional, easy to get along with, coachable, and consistent in her performance. She also knows her job well, shows up, and gets it done. But, in addition to this, Candidate 2 has an uncanny knack for spotting emerging challenges and opportunities she anticipates the changing needs of the team, she identifies and communicates i mportant challenges and opportunities with others, and takes initiative to address those emerging possibilitiesincluding the potential obstacles that could block themwith consistent results.Again, you have the choice of promoting only one person, so who gets the job? Both of these candidates are nearly identical, except for the fact that one of them has a tremendous upside because of their capacity to go beyond their standard job description and implement a platzset of skills that could keep them relevant as the industry and company change over time. My guess is that you would choose Candidate 2 for the job. This single competencythe capacity to recognize the top priority in every situationis the pivotal difference maker when all other factors are equal.
